Installation Guide – Etna Marengo 12×24 Porcelain Tile Natural Rectified

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (e.g., ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Ensure proper substrate preparation, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances suitable for 12×24 tile.
  • Dry-lay to plan layout, center the pattern, and avoid small perimeter cuts.
  • Blend tiles from multiple boxes to evenly distribute shade/pattern variation.
  • Use spacers and a joint width appropriate for rectified tile; include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer‑modified thin‑set mortar approved for porcelain tile.
  • Key mortar into the substrate, then comb with an appropriate notched trowel; back‑butter tiles as needed to improve coverage.
  • Set tiles with a slight back‑and‑forth motion to collapse ridges and achieve the bond; target coverage levels per industry guidelines (typically 80–95% based on area and location).
  • Employ a tile leveling system when helpful to reduce lippage with larger formats.
  • Allow mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting or opening to light traffic.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut using a wet saw with a premium diamond blade rated for porcelain.
  • Mark cuts carefully and fully support the tile during cutting to reduce chipping.
  • Ease sharp cut edges where they will be exposed.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout suitable for porcelain and the chosen joint width; mix and apply per manufacturer directions.
  • Pack joints completely with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
  • Use appropriate sealants at movement joints and changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
  • Protect the installation from foot traffic until grout has cured.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH‑neutral cleaner formulated for porcelain; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
  • Use entry mats and furniture glides to limit tracked‑in grit and surface abrasion.
  • Follow grout manufacturer guidance for care; reseal cementitious grout if recommended.
