Installation Guide – Stratus Grigio Natural Rectified 4×12 Porcelain Tile

Important Advisory

Review the material before installation to confirm color, shade, size, edge condition, and quantity. Follow Happy Floors installation recommendations, mortar and grout manufacturer instructions, applicable local building codes, and recognized tile-industry standards. Confirm that the tile, substrate, setting materials, and site conditions are compatible before work begins.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Measure the installation area and establish reference lines before setting tile.
  • Dry-lay material to plan the 4×12 layout, account for cuts, and coordinate the rectified edges with the selected grout joint.
  • Plan movement joints and perimeter gaps as required by the substrate, room size, environmental conditions, and applicable industry standards.
  • Mix material from multiple boxes when appropriate to maintain a balanced appearance throughout the installation.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Install over a clean, dry, flat, stable, and properly prepared substrate that meets the requirements of the tile installation system.
  • For porcelain tile, select a quality mortar suitable for porcelain and the specific substrate and application. Use the mortar manufacturer’s recommendations to determine the appropriate trowel and application method.
  • Key or spread mortar consistently, staying within the manufacturer’s open time, and press each tile firmly into place to achieve proper contact.
  • Periodically lift a tile to verify mortar transfer and coverage. Adjust the installation method if coverage is insufficient for the specific application.
  • Use spacers or another approved layout method to maintain consistent joints. Check lines and alignment frequently, especially with stacked or offset patterns.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut porcelain tile with a professional tile cutter, wet saw, or other equipment designed for porcelain.
  • Measure and dry-fit cut pieces before applying setting material.
  • Use appropriate tools for openings around outlets, plumbing, transitions, and other penetrations.
  • Handle cut pieces carefully and protect finished surfaces during installation.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Allow the mortar to cure according to the mortar manufacturer’s instructions before grouting.
  • Use a grout compatible with porcelain tile and the selected joint width. Apply it according to the grout manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Remove excess grout from the tile surface and joints with suitable tools and a clean, damp sponge without overwetting the installation.
  • Respect movement joints and perimeter gaps; fill them with an appropriate flexible sealant rather than rigid grout where required by the installation system.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Remove mortar and grout residue promptly using cleaning methods approved for porcelain tile.
  • Clean the surface routinely with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner suitable for porcelain tile.
  • Avoid abrasive tools, harsh chemicals, and cleaning products that may leave a film or damage adjacent grout and sealants.
  • Maintain grout joints, movement joints, and sealants according to their manufacturers’ care recommendations.
