Installation Guide – Pietra D’Assisi Ocra 12×24 Porcelain Tile Natural

Important Advisory

Always follow Happy Floors and mortar, grout, and setting-material manufacturer instructions, applicable local building codes, and recognized tile industry standards such as ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines. Confirm that the substrate, drainage, waterproofing, movement accommodation, and overall installation system are appropriate for the selected application.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Confirm the tile, color, finish, shade, and lot before installation. Blend pieces from multiple boxes to distribute natural variation consistently.
  • Verify that the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and appropriately flat for the selected tile layout.
  • Dry-lay the installation and plan the layout to balance cuts at walls, corners, and transitions. Coordinate the tile with adjacent materials and fixed elements.
  • Plan movement joints and changes of plane according to the project conditions and recognized industry standards. Do not bridge required movement joints with tile or grout.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a setting material approved for porcelain tile and suitable for the specific substrate and application.
  • Apply mortar according to the setting-material manufacturer’s instructions, using proper technique to achieve consistent coverage and full support beneath the tile.
  • Set each tile with a slight back-and-forth motion to help collapse mortar ridges and maintain alignment. Use spacers or another layout method appropriate for the selected joint design.
  • Check tile faces and joints during installation, remove excess mortar before it hardens, and allow the installation to cure according to the setting-material manufacturer’s instructions before grouting or use.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut porcelain tile with appropriate professional equipment and a diamond blade designed for porcelain.
  • Measure and mark cuts carefully, support the tile during cutting, and use suitable methods to reduce chipping.
  • Ease or finish exposed cut edges as needed for transitions and other visible details. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select grout compatible with porcelain tile, the planned joint width, and the conditions of the installation. Follow the grout manufacturer’s instructions for mixing, application, cleaning, and curing.
  • Fill joints fully with the appropriate grout tool, clean the tile surface without disturbing the joints, and remove grout haze using methods approved for the tile and grout.
  • Use an appropriate flexible sealant at changes of plane, movement joints, and other locations where required. Do not fill these joints with rigid grout.
  • Protect the completed installation from traffic, moisture, staining, and impact until the grout and setting materials have cured as directed.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Remove installation residue using products and procedures recommended for porcelain tile and the installed grout.
  • Maintain the surface with routine sweeping or dust removal and a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for porcelain tile.
  • Avoid harsh acids, abrasive products, and cleaning methods that may damage the grout or surrounding materials.
  • Follow the grout manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations, including any guidance regarding sealing cementitious grout.
