Important Advisory
Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Verify substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and required waterproofing/drainage for wet or exterior areas.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances for the selected tile size.
- Dry-lay tiles to plan layout, balance cuts, and align patterns; center the field to avoid narrow edge pieces.
- Blend product from multiple boxes to evenly distribute any shade or pattern variation.
- Use spacers appropriate for rectified edges and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171 at changes of plane and perimeters.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile and the project conditions (interior/exterior, wall/floor).
- Key mortar into the substrate, then comb in one direction with an appropriate notched trowel. Back-butter tiles as needed to improve bond.
- Set tiles with a perpendicular slide to collapse ridges and achieve proper contact; target coverage consistent with standards for the application (typically 80–95%).

Step 3: Cutting

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for porcelain tile; avoid harsh acids or abrasives.
- Use entry mats and protective pads to reduce tracked-in grit and potential surface abrasion.
- Follow grout and setting material manufacturers’ maintenance guidance; reseal cementitious grout if recommended.
