Installation Guide – Step by Step
Step 1: Surface Preparation – Clean and Flat
- Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and structurally sound.
- Check substrate flatness using a long level; correct dips and high spots with a leveling compound.
- Apply a waterproofing membrane in wet areas such as showers or backsplashes.
Step 2: Layout Planning – Align with Intent
- Choose your layout: stacked, herringbone, or vertical for the best visual impact.
- Dry-lay tiles to preview veining direction and achieve a balanced look using Iceberg marble’s natural variation.
- Use **1/16″–1/8″ grout joints** depending on design preference and edge alignment.
- Blend tiles from multiple boxes to ensure uniform color distribution.
Step 3: Mortar Application – Use White Thin-Set
Recommended Adhesives:
- Mapei Ultraflex LFT White
- Laticrete 254 Platinum White
- Ardex X77 White
Instructions:
- Apply mortar using a 1/4″ square-notched trowel for wall applications.
- Back-butter each tile for proper adhesion, especially important for narrow tiles.
- Work in small areas to prevent mortar skin-over.
Step 4: Cutting & Fitting – Precision Cuts
- Use a wet saw with a fine diamond blade rated for marble to achieve smooth, chip-free cuts.
- For herringbone patterns, make sure angles are cut precisely for tight joints.
- Test-fit cut pieces before securing them in place.
Step 5: Setting Tiles – Maintain Pattern and Alignment
- Start from the center or a visible focal point and work outward.
- Use spacers to maintain even grout lines and a consistent pattern.
- Tap tiles into place with a rubber mallet to ensure level installation and prevent lippage.
- Clean excess mortar promptly to avoid staining the honed surface.
Step 6: Grouting & Sealing – Protect and Finish
- Pre-seal with a penetrating sealer to protect against grout staining on honed marble.
- Use non-sanded grout for narrow joints to avoid scratching the marble surface.
- Apply grout with a rubber float at a diagonal angle, and wipe clean with a damp sponge immediately.
- Allow grout to cure for 72 hours, then apply a second coat of sealer for added protection.
Maintenance Tips – Keep It Timeless
- Use pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaners designed for natural stone.
- Wipe spills quickly to prevent potential staining or etching.
- Reseal the surface every 6–12 months, especially in wet or high-use areas.
- Avoid using acidic or bleach-based products that could damage the honed surface.
