Installation Guide – Etna Perla 12×24 Porcelain Tile Natural Rectified

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Confirm substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required by the application.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Verify the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances for the 12×24 format.
  • Dry-lay to confirm layout, balance cuts, and align grout joints; center the design to avoid narrow perimeter pieces.
  • Blend tiles from multiple boxes to evenly distribute any shade or pattern variation.
  • Use spacers appropriate for rectified tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and, where applicable, for larger-format tiles.
  • Key mortar into the substrate, then comb in straight lines with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve coverage.
  • Set tiles with a slight back-and-forth motion to collapse ridges and achieve required coverage (typically 80–95% depending on area and exposure).
  • Use a tile leveling system when helpful to minimize lippage on larger-format installations.
  • Allow mortar to cure per manufacturer guidance before grouting or opening to light traffic.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut using a wet saw with a premium diamond blade designed for porcelain.
  • Support the tile fully, mark cuts carefully, and ease sharp cut edges at exposed transitions.
  • Drill holes with porcelain-rated bits at low speed with adequate cooling.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout suitable for porcelain and the chosen joint width; follow manufacturer instructions for mixing, application, and cure.
  • Pack joints fully with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
  • Use flexible sealant at movement joints and changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
  • Protect the installation from traffic until grout cures per manufacturer guidance.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH‑neutral cleaner suitable for porcelain tile; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
  • Use entry mats and felt pads to reduce grit and scratching in high-traffic areas.
  • Follow grout manufacturer maintenance guidance; reseal cementitious grout if recommended.
