Installation Guide – Ivory 16″x24″ Tumbled Travertine Tile
Important Notes
- This product is made from natural travertine and features a tumbled finish.
- Suitable for both indoor and outdoor horizontal installations (e.g., floors, patios, pool decks).
- As a porous natural stone, travertine requires sealing before and after installation.
Step 1: Surface Preparation
- Ensure the substrate is level, clean, dry, and structurally sound.
- Acceptable surfaces include concrete slab, mortar bed, cement board (indoors), or exterior-rated surfaces.
- Use crack isolation or waterproofing membranes as needed (especially in wet areas or exterior applications).
Step 2: Layout Planning
- Dry lay tiles to balance color variations and layout patterns.
- Recommended layout: running bond or French pattern.
- Use spacers to maintain a consistent grout joint (1/8″–1/4″ is common for tumbled travertine).
Step 3: Adhesive Application
Recommended Mortars:
- Laticrete® 254 Platinum, Mapei® Ultraflex LFT
- White thinset is recommended to avoid darkening the stone
Instructions:
- Apply thinset using a 1/2″ notched trowel for full coverage.
- Back-butter each tile to ensure proper adhesion and reduce hollow spots.
- Tap tiles gently with a rubber mallet to set them in place.
Step 4: Cutting
- Use a wet saw with a diamond blade rated for natural stone.
- Support large-format tiles carefully during cuts to avoid breakage.
Step 5: Grouting
- Wait 24 hours for mortar to cure before grouting.
- Use non-sanded or sanded grout depending on joint size. For wider joints, sanded grout is preferred.
- Tumbled travertine may require grout release or pre-sealing to avoid grout staining.
Step 6: Sealing
- Pre-seal tiles before grouting with a penetrating, breathable sealer.
- After installation, seal again to protect from moisture, stains, and etching.
- Reapply sealer every 1–2 years, or as recommended based on traffic/exposure.
Maintenance
- Clean with a pH-neutral, non-acidic cleaner designed for natural stone.
- Avoid vinegar, bleach, or ammonia-based products.
- Use rugs or mats in high-traffic areas to reduce wear.
Disclaimer
Travertine is a naturally porous material and should be sealed appropriately. Color, texture, and pits are part of the natural beauty of the stone. Always follow ANSI and TCNA guidelines for natural stone installations and consult the adhesive manufacturer for specific product compatibility.
