Installation Guide – Stratus Oro 12×24 Porcelain Tile Polished Rectified
Important Advisory
Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Confirm substrate suitability, flatness, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Verify the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within tolerance for 12×24 tile.
- Plan the layout, dry-lay as needed, and center the design to minimize small perimeter cuts.
- Blend tiles from multiple boxes to distribute any shade or pattern variation.
- Select a joint width appropriate for rectified tile; include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and for the tile’s size/format.
- Key mortar into the substrate, then comb with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles to improve contact.
- Set tiles with a slight back-and-forth motion to collapse ridges and achieve required coverage for the area of use.
- Use a leveling system if needed to help minimize lippage with larger-format installations.
- Protect the installation and allow mortar to cure per manufacturer guidance before grouting or traffic.
Step 3: Cutting
- Use a wet saw with a premium diamond blade rated for porcelain.
- Mark cuts carefully, support the tile fully, and cut slowly to reduce chipping.
- Ease sharp cut edges where they may be exposed.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Select a grout suitable for porcelain and the chosen joint width; follow the grout manufacturer’s instructions.
- Pack joints fully with a rubber float and clean diagonally; remove haze promptly with clean water.
- Use appropriate sealant at movement joints and changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
- Test grout on a spare tile if there is any concern about abrasion on polished surfaces.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for porcelain; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
- Use entry mats and protective pads to minimize tracked-in grit and scratching.
- Follow grout and setting material manufacturers’ care recommendations; reseal cementitious grout if advised.
