Important Advisory
Always follow the Happy Floors installation instructions, applicable local building codes, and recognized tile industry standards, including ANSI and TCNA guidance where applicable. Confirm that the selected application, substrate, waterproofing, drainage, and movement-joint design are appropriate for the project.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Verify that the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and properly prepared for porcelain tile installation.
- Plan the layout before setting tile, balancing the design and avoiding unnecessarily narrow perimeter cuts.
- Review tiles from multiple boxes during layout to distribute normal shade and pattern variation evenly.
- Use spacers or an approved layout system to maintain consistent joints, and provide movement accommodation as required by the installation environment and industry standards.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a setting material approved for porcelain tile and suitable for the specific substrate and application.
- Apply mortar according to the mortar manufacturer’s instructions, combing it consistently and ensuring proper contact between the tile and substrate.
- Set each tile with appropriate pressure and movement to establish a secure bond and maintain the planned alignment.
- Check the installation regularly for coverage, alignment, lippage, and open mortar joints. Allow the setting material to cure according to its manufacturer’s instructions before grouting or allowing traffic.
Step 3: Cutting
- Cut porcelain tile with equipment and a diamond blade intended for porcelain.
- Measure and mark cuts carefully, supporting the tile during cutting to help minimize chipping.
- Ease or finish exposed cut edges where needed, particularly at transitions and other visible locations.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Select a grout compatible with porcelain tile, the planned joint width, and the project conditions.
- Mix, apply, clean, and cure the grout according to the grout manufacturer’s instructions.
- Keep movement joints and changes of plane free of grout; use an appropriate sealant or joint treatment as required by the installation design.
- Protect the finished installation from traffic and contamination until the grout and setting materials have cured as directed.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Remove installation residue using products and procedures recommended for porcelain tile and the grout system.
- Maintain the surface with routine cleaning and a suitable pH-neutral cleaner; avoid harsh abrasives and chemicals that may damage adjacent materials or grout.
- Address spills and abrasive debris promptly, and follow the grout manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations.
- For exterior installations, confirm that drainage, freeze-thaw exposure, and maintenance requirements remain appropriate for the selected assembly.
