Important Advisory
Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Verify substrate suitability for the intended area and provide proper waterproofing and movement accommodation where required.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances; address cracks, deflection, and moisture concerns before setting tile.
- Dry-lay tiles to plan layout, optimize cuts, and center key sightlines; avoid narrow perimeter pieces where possible.
- Blend product from multiple boxes to distribute shade and pattern variation evenly.
- Select a grout joint width appropriate for pressed edges and the tile’s inherent size variation; include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile.
- Key mortar into the substrate, then comb in one direction with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve contact.
- Set tiles with a slight back-and-forth motion to collapse ridges and achieve the coverage required by application and location (typically 80–95%).
- Use a tile leveling system if needed to help control lippage and maintain plane.
- Allow the mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting or opening to light traffic.
Step 3: Cutting
- Use a wet saw with a quality diamond blade rated for porcelain.
- Mark and support cuts carefully to minimize chipping.
- Ease sharp cut edges where they will be exposed.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Choose a grout suitable for porcelain and the selected joint width; follow manufacturer mixing and cure guidance.
- Pack joints fully with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
- Use appropriate sealant at movement joints and all changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
- Protect the installation from traffic until grout has cured.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner appropriate for porcelain tile; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
- Use entry mats and protective pads under furniture to limit abrasion from grit.
- Follow grout manufacturer maintenance guidance; seal cementitious grout if recommended.
