Installation Guide – Athena Miel 12×24 Porcelain Tile Polished Rectified

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Verify substrate suitability, flatness, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, rigid, and flat within tolerances appropriate for 12×24 tile.
  • Plan the layout by dry-fitting to center the design, minimize small perimeter cuts, and align grout joints with key sightlines.
  • Blend tiles from multiple boxes to evenly distribute any shade or pattern variation.
  • Use spacers appropriate for rectified tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171 and project conditions.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile.
  • Key mortar into the substrate, then comb in one direction with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve bond.
  • Set tiles with a slight sliding motion to collapse ridges and achieve proper coverage per industry standards and site conditions.
  • Use a tile leveling system if needed to help minimize lippage with 12×24 tiles.
  • Observe mortar cure times before grouting or allowing traffic, per manufacturer guidance.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut with a wet saw using a premium diamond blade rated for porcelain.
  • Support the tile fully during cuts and mark carefully to reduce chipping.
  • Lightly ease exposed cut edges where appropriate for safer transitions.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout suitable for porcelain and the chosen joint width; follow the grout manufacturer’s instructions.
  • For polished surfaces, test grout on a spare tile to check for scratching or pigment residue before full application.
  • Pack joints fully, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly. Use sealant at movement joints and changes of plane—do not grout these areas.
  • Protect the installation from traffic and moisture until grout has cured per manufacturer guidelines.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner formulated for porcelain tile; avoid harsh acids, alkalis, or abrasive pads.
  • Use entry mats and protective glides/pads to limit tracked-in grit and scratching.
  • Follow grout manufacturer recommendations for maintenance; seal cementitious grout if specified by the grout manufacturer.
