Installation Guide – Berwyn Ivory 12×24 Porcelain Tile Natural Rectified

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Verify substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within tolerances for large-format tile.
  • Dry-lay to plan layout and balance cuts; center the design to avoid narrow slivers at perimeters.
  • Blend material from multiple boxes to evenly distribute shade and pattern variation.
  • Select a joint width appropriate for rectified tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and large-format tiles.
  • Key mortar into the substrate, comb with an appropriate notched trowel, and back-butter tiles as needed to improve coverage.
  • Set tiles with a slight slide to collapse ridges; target coverage consistent with location and exposure (typically 80–95%).
  • Use a tile leveling system when helpful to reduce lippage on large-format installations.
  • Allow mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting or opening to light traffic.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut using a wet saw fitted with a premium diamond blade rated for porcelain.
  • Mark cuts carefully and fully support the tile to minimize chipping.
  • Ease sharp cut edges where exposed for a safer, finished transition.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Choose a grout suitable for porcelain and the selected joint width; mix and apply per manufacturer instructions.
  • Pack joints fully, clean diagonally across the tile face, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
  • Use appropriate sealant at movement joints and changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
  • Protect the installation from traffic until grout has cured.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for porcelain; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
  • Use entry mats and felt pads to limit tracked-in grit and scratching.
  • Follow grout and setting material manufacturers’ maintenance recommendations; reseal cementitious grout if advised.
