Installation Guide – French Quarter Orleans 12×24 Porcelain Tile Natural Pressed

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Confirm substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Verify the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances for 12×24 large-format tile.
  • Dry-lay to confirm layout, centering the design and avoiding narrow perimeter cuts.
  • Blend tiles from multiple boxes to distribute any shade/pattern variation evenly.
  • Plan appropriate grout joint widths for pressed-edge tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171, especially at perimeters, transitions, and sun‑exposed areas.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and, when applicable, for large-format tiles.
  • Key mortar into the substrate, then comb in one direction with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve coverage.
  • Set tiles with a slight back-and-forth motion to collapse ridges and achieve required coverage (typically 80–95% depending on area and exposure).
  • Use a leveling system if needed to help minimize lippage on large-format installations.
  • Observe mortar cure times before grouting or subjecting the surface to light traffic.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut with a wet saw equipped with a premium diamond blade suitable for porcelain.
  • Mark cuts carefully, support the tile fully, and feed steadily to reduce chipping.
  • Ease sharp cut edges where exposed for a comfortable, finished transition.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout suitable for porcelain and the chosen joint width; follow manufacturer instructions for mixing, application, and cure.
  • Pack joints completely with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
  • Use appropriate sealants at movement joints and all changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
  • Protect the installation from foot traffic until grout has cured as directed.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH‑neutral cleaner approved for porcelain tile; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
  • Use entry mats and felt pads on furniture to reduce tracked-in grit and potential scratching.
  • Follow grout manufacturer maintenance guidance; seal cementitious grout if recommended.
