Important Note
This guide covers the paver placement phase only. Sub-base preparation, drainage, and bedding layers must be completed by qualified professionals before installation.
Step 1: Dry Layout & Planning
- Dry-lay pavers to evaluate natural color variation and veining.
- Use running bond or staggered layouts to minimize lippage with large-format pieces.
- Establish straight reference lines using chalk lines or a laser level.
Step 2: Paver Placement
- Place each 16″x24″ paver onto a properly leveled bedding surface.
- Maintain consistent joint spacing of 3/16″–1/4″.
- Tap gently with a rubber mallet to ensure full bedding contact.
- Check edges frequently and adjust bedding to prevent lippage.
Step 3: Cutting & Edge Finishing
- Use a wet saw with a diamond blade approved for travertine.
- Support large-format pavers during cutting to prevent cracking.
- Soften cut edges with a rubbing stone to match the tumbled finish.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Fill joints with polymeric sand or a travertine-compatible joint filler.
- Compact gently and remove excess material.
- Lightly mist if polymeric sand is used, following manufacturer instructions.
Step 5: Sealing & Maintenance
- Apply a breathable, penetrating sealer once installation is dry.
- Re-seal every 12–24 months depending on exposure and traffic.
- Clean only with pH-neutral stone cleaners.
