Confirm the tile, mortar, grout, substrate, waterproofing, drainage, movement accommodation, and site conditions are suitable for the intended application before installation.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Confirm the ordered material, color, size, finish, edge, and Mark design variation before beginning installation.
- Inspect tiles from all boxes and blend material from multiple boxes to distribute normal shade and pattern variation throughout the installation.
- Verify that the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and properly prepared for porcelain tile. Plan the layout to balance cuts and avoid unnecessarily narrow perimeter pieces.
- Dry-lay or carefully mark the layout before setting tile. Establish straight reference lines and select a joint width appropriate for rectified tile, the installation pattern, and applicable industry guidance. Provide movement joints where required by the project conditions and recognized standards.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a suitable tile-setting mortar approved for porcelain and compatible with the substrate and application. Follow the mortar manufacturer’s instructions.
- Apply mortar to the properly prepared substrate using the method and coverage appropriate for the tile size, location, and installation conditions. Periodically verify coverage and adjust the setting method as needed.
- Set each tile with consistent alignment and joint spacing, using a suitable leveling or alignment method when helpful. Avoid disturbing tiles after the mortar begins to set.
- Maintain movement joints at required locations and coordinate waterproofing, drainage, and changes of plane in wet or exterior installations. Allow the mortar to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions before grouting or permitting traffic.
Step 3: Cutting
- Cut porcelain tile with suitable professional equipment and a diamond blade intended for porcelain.
- Measure and mark carefully, support the tile during cutting, and protect finished surfaces from chipping.
- Ease or finish exposed cut edges as appropriate for the design. Wear suitable eye, respiratory, and hearing protection when cutting.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Use grout that is compatible with porcelain tile, the selected joint width, and the intended application. Follow the grout manufacturer’s mixing, placement, cleaning, and curing instructions.
- Remove excess mortar from the joints before grouting and pack the joints fully without forcing grout into movement joints or changes of plane.
- Use an appropriate flexible sealant at movement joints, inside corners, and other changes of plane where required. Protect the installation until the grout and sealant have cured.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Remove installation residue using products and methods recommended for porcelain tile and the selected grout. Avoid harsh acids, abrasive tools, or cleaners that may damage adjacent materials or grout.
- Maintain the surface with routine sweeping or dust removal and a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for porcelain tile.
- Address spills and tracked-in grit promptly, and follow the grout manufacturer’s recommendations for ongoing care and sealing where applicable.
