Important Advisory
Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Verify substrate suitability, flatness, and appropriate waterproofing/drainage where required. Incorporate movement joints per TCNA EJ171.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within tolerances for large-format tile.
- Dry-lay to balance the layout, align grout joints, and avoid narrow perimeter cuts.
- Blend tiles from multiple boxes to evenly distribute shade and pattern variation.
- Use spacers sized for rectified tile and the selected pattern; include movement accommodation joints at perimeters and transitions per EJ171 guidelines. For rectangular tiles, follow manufacturer/industry guidance on running-bond offsets to minimize lippage.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and large-format tiles.
- Key mortar into the substrate, then comb in one direction with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles to improve contact.
