Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Verify field dimensions and establish control lines before setting tile.
- Dry-lay material from multiple boxes to review the natural bone color and vein-cut variation, then blend tiles throughout the installation for a balanced appearance.
- Plan the 4×12 brick layout, including running bond, stacked, vertical, or other approved patterns, before applying mortar.
- Account for doors, fixtures, transitions, penetrations, and movement joints during layout planning rather than relying on small perimeter cuts where avoidable. Use grout-joint dimensions appropriate to the rectified tile, substrate, pattern, and applicable industry guidance.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Install over a clean, dry, stable, properly prepared substrate that meets the requirements of the selected setting system and applicable standards.
- Correct cracks, uneven areas, contamination, or other substrate conditions that could affect tile adhesion or finished appearance before installation.
- Use a quality mortar suitable for porcelain tile and the specific substrate and environment. Follow the mortar manufacturer’s requirements for mixing, application, open time, and curing.
- Apply mortar consistently with the manufacturer-recommended trowel and technique for the tile size and substrate. Periodically lift tiles to verify appropriate mortar transfer and coverage.
- Set tiles firmly into the mortar while maintaining the planned alignment and joints. Avoid relying on tile edges to correct an uneven substrate, and remove excess mortar from joints before it hardens where practical.
Step 3: Cutting
- Use a professional wet saw or tile-cutting tool with equipment suitable for porcelain tile.
- Measure and dry-fit cut pieces before setting them, allowing for planned joints and movement accommodation.
- Use appropriate tools for openings around plumbing, outlets, corners, and other penetrations. Protect finished surfaces from chipping during handling and cutting.
- Place cut edges in locations appropriate to the layout, transitions, or trim details when possible.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Allow the setting material to cure according to the mortar manufacturer’s instructions before grouting.
- Select a grout compatible with porcelain tile, the planned joint width, and the installation environment. Follow the grout manufacturer’s mixing and application instructions.
- Pack grout fully into the joints, remove excess from the tile surface, and clean with a properly damp sponge without overwashing the joints.
- Honor movement joints and changes in plane with an appropriate flexible sealant or approved movement-joint treatment rather than rigid grout, as required by the installation conditions and applicable standards.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Remove mortar and grout residue promptly using cleaning methods approved for natural-finish porcelain tile.
- Clean regularly with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner suitable for porcelain tile and the installed surface.
- Avoid abrasive tools, harsh chemicals, and cleaning products that may leave a residue or affect the finished appearance.
- Maintain grout and flexible sealant joints according to their manufacturers’ recommendations, and address damage or persistent moisture issues promptly.
