Installation Guide – Claystone Ivory 12×12 Rectified Natural Porcelain Tile

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions and applicable industry standards (e.g., ANSI, TCNA). Verify substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and local code requirements. Use appropriate waterproofing in wet areas and confirm mortar, grout, and accessories are compatible with porcelain tile.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Confirm the substrate is clean, sound, flat, and dry; correct irregularities before setting tile.
  • Review multiple tiles to understand shade and pattern variation; blend from several boxes for a balanced look.
  • Establish control lines to center and square the layout; dry-lay to refine joint alignment and cut placement.
  • Plan movement joints in accordance with industry guidelines and project conditions.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a high-quality polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and the specific substrate; white mortar may be preferred for light tones.
  • Trowel mortar consistently in one direction and set tiles perpendicular to the ridges to improve coverage and air release.
  • Back-butter as needed to achieve proper contact, especially on uneven substrates or where higher coverage is required.
  • Maintain consistent joint widths and check alignment and flatness frequently; use leveling aids if appropriate.
  • Clean excess mortar from joints and surface before it hardens; allow mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting or traffic.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Use a wet saw with a premium diamond blade rated for porcelain for clean edges.
  • Measure carefully and dry-fit cuts; support tiles fully during cutting to reduce chipping.
  • Use appropriate diamond hole saws or core bits for penetrations and fixtures; ease sharp cut edges if required.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout compatible with porcelain and the chosen joint width (sanded, unsanded, or suitable alternative).
  • Pack joints fully and strike off excess; clean diagonally with a damp sponge, refreshing rinse water frequently.
  • Allow grout to cure per manufacturer guidelines; seal only if the selected grout requires it.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove abrasive debris.
  • Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner formulated for porcelain; avoid harsh acids or oil-based soaps.
  • Wipe spills promptly and use protective glides under furniture where appropriate.
  • Follow grout maintenance recommendations; re-seal only if the grout system specifies.
