Installation Guide – Bernini Frozen 12×24 Porcelain Tile Polished Rectified

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Verify substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required by the application.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances for the 12×24 format.
  • Dry-lay to balance the layout, centering fields and avoiding narrow perimeter cuts.
  • Blend tiles from multiple boxes to distribute any shade or pattern variation evenly.
  • Select a joint width appropriate for rectified tile and the pattern; provide movement joints per TCNA EJ171.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile.
  • Key mortar into the substrate, then comb with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve coverage.
  • Set tiles with a slight perpendicular motion to collapse ridges and achieve proper bond; target 80–95% mortar coverage based on area and exposure.
  • Use a leveling system if needed to help control lippage with the 12×24 format.
  • Allow mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting or light service.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut using a wet saw with a premium diamond blade suitable for porcelain.
  • Mark and support cuts carefully to minimize chipping.
  • Ease sharp cut edges where they will be exposed.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout compatible with porcelain and the chosen joint width; follow the grout manufacturer’s directions for mixing, application, and cure times.
  • Pack joints fully with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
  • At changes of plane and movement joints, use appropriate sealant rather than grout.
  • For polished surfaces, confirm grout selection and cleaning methods will not scratch or etch; always test in a small area first.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for porcelain; avoid acids, bleach, or harsh abrasives.
  • Use entry mats and felt pads to limit tracked-in grit and scratching.
  • Follow grout manufacturer maintenance guidance; seal cementitious grout if recommended.
  • Protect newly installed tile from traffic until mortar and grout have cured.
