Important Advisory
Follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and applicable ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines. Verify substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required for the intended application.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, sound, and flat within tolerances appropriate for 12×24 tile.
- Dry-lay to plan the layout, balance cuts, and center the pattern to avoid narrow slivers at perimeters.
- Blend tiles from multiple cartons to evenly distribute any shade or pattern variation.
- Use spacers appropriate for rectified tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a high-quality polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile.
- Key mortar into the substrate, then comb in one direction with a suitable notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed for full support.
- Set tiles with a slight lateral motion to collapse ridges and promote bond; achieve coverage appropriate to location and service (typically 80–95%).

Step 3: Cutting

- Use entry mats and furniture pads to reduce tracked grit and potential scratching.
- Maintain grout per manufacturer recommendations; seal cementitious grout if advised.
