Installation Guide – Volakas Marble 2″x2″ Honed Mosaic Tile

Material Notes

• Natural Volakas marble with a Honed (matte) finish.
• 2″x2″ chips mesh-mounted on ~12″x12″ sheets (some lots may be paper-faced).
• Suitable for walls, shower surrounds, backsplashes, and light-traffic residential floors. Mosaic format provides better grip, but marble may still be slippery when wet.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

• Substrate must be clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat (≤1/8″ in 10′). Skim/patch as needed.
• Approved substrates: cement backer board, properly cured concrete, or mortar bed meeting ANSI standards.
• Wet areas: install ANSI A118.10 waterproofing; shower floors require 1/4″ per foot slope to the drain.
• Always use white setting materials under light marble to prevent shadowing or discoloration.

Step 2: Dry Layout & Sheet Planning

• Blend sheets from multiple boxes to distribute natural shade and veining variation.
• Snap level reference lines; plan balanced perimeter and fixture cuts.
• Trim mesh edges and stagger sheet seams so the sheet grid disappears after installation.

Step 3: Adhesive (White Thin-Set) Application

Use:

• White, polymer-modified thin-set rated for natural stone (ANSI A118.4 / A118.15). Do not use premixed mastic, especially in wet areas.

Trowel & Technique:

• 3/16″ V-notch (or 1/4″ × 3/16″ V-notch) on flat substrates.
• Key in mortar with flat side, comb in one direction, then lightly flatten ridges to prevent telegraphing through the mosaics.
• Work in small sections (10–15 minutes open time) to avoid skinning.

Step 4: Setting the Mosaics

• Place sheets along layout lines; press using a rubber grout float or beating block for full contact and even surface.
• Adjust immediately if lippage occurs; back-butter individual pieces when necessary.
• Clean excess thin-set from joints and tile surface immediately with a damp sponge or microfiber cloth.
• If paper-faced: install with paper facing out, beat in, lightly wet after initial set (≈10–20 minutes), remove paper, and adjust joints.

Step 5: Cutting & Detailing

• Use a wet saw with a continuous-rim diamond blade for clean marble cuts.
• Apply painter’s tape along cut lines to minimize chipping.
• Use nippers for small adjustments and smooth edges with a rubbing stone.
• Finish exposed edges with trim pieces, metal profiles, or matching moldings.

Step 6: Grouting (Honed Marble)

• Allow thin-set to cure fully (typically 24 hours).
• For joints ≤1/8″, use unsanded grout to prevent surface scratching.
• Pre-sealing or using a grout release is recommended to avoid staining on light marble; always test first.
• Apply grout diagonally and clean with minimal water to prevent discoloration or grout washout.

Step 7: Sealing

• After grout cures (≈72 hours), apply a penetrating sealer suitable for marble and grout.
• Reapply sealer periodically (every 1–2 years depending on usage).

Maintenance

• Use pH-neutral stone cleaners only; avoid acidic or abrasive products.
• Do not use vinegar, bleach, or harsh chemicals that may damage marble.
• In wet areas, wipe dry after use to reduce mineral buildup and water spots.

Movement Joints

• Follow TCNA EJ171 guidelines for movement joints.
• Use 100% silicone sealant in corners and transitions between materials.
