Installation Guide – Royal Beige 2″x2″ Polished Marble Mosaic Tile

Material Notes

• Premium Royal Beige natural marble with a polished finish.
• 2″x2″ square mosaics mesh-mounted on approximately 12″x12″ sheets.
• Recommended for backsplashes, bathroom walls, shower surrounds, fireplace surrounds, and light-duty residential floors. Polished marble may become slippery when wet.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

• Ensure the installation surface is clean, dry, structurally sound, and level (maximum variation of 1/8″ over 10′).
• Suitable substrates include cement backer board, cured concrete, or properly prepared mortar beds that comply with ANSI standards.
• For wet areas, install an ANSI A118.10 waterproof membrane before tile installation.
• Always use a white polymer-modified thin-set mortar when installing light-colored marble to prevent discoloration.

Step 2: Dry Layout

• Lay out several sheets before installation to blend natural color and veining variations.
• Mark reference lines to maintain straight rows and balanced cuts.
• Offset sheet joints whenever possible to create a seamless finished appearance.

Step 3: Thin-Set Application

Recommended Adhesive:

• White polymer-modified thin-set mortar meeting ANSI A118.4 or ANSI A118.15.

Trowel Recommendation:

• Use a 3/16″ V-notch or 1/4″ × 3/16″ V-notch trowel.
• Spread mortar evenly in one direction, then lightly flatten the ridges before setting the mosaic sheets.
• Only apply enough mortar that can be covered within 10–15 minutes.

Step 4: Installing the Mosaic Sheets

• Place each sheet carefully following the layout lines.
• Use a rubber grout float to press the sheet evenly into the mortar.
• Adjust individual pieces as needed to maintain consistent grout joints.
• Remove excess thin-set from the joints immediately using a damp sponge.

Step 5: Cutting & Finishing

• Cut marble using a wet saw equipped with a continuous-rim diamond blade.
• Small adjustments may be made using mosaic tile nippers.
• Finish exposed edges with matching marble trim or metal edge profiles.

Step 6: Grouting

• Allow the thin-set mortar to cure for approximately 24 hours.
• For grout joints up to 1/8″, use unsanded grout to protect the polished marble surface.
• Applying a penetrating sealer before grouting is recommended to minimize grout staining.
• Clean grout residue promptly using minimal water to preserve the polished finish.

Step 7: Sealing

• After grout has cured (typically 72 hours), apply a high-quality penetrating sealer suitable for natural marble.
• Reapply sealer every 1–2 years depending on traffic levels and moisture exposure.

Maintenance

• Clean regularly using a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
• Avoid acidic cleaners, vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or abrasive pads, as these may damage the polished marble surface.
• In shower applications, wiping the surface dry after use helps minimize water spots and mineral buildup.

Movement Joints

• Follow TCNA EJ171 guidelines for movement joints around perimeters, corners, and changes in plane.
• Use 100% stone-safe silicone sealant at inside corners and transitions to other materials.
