Installation Guide – Step by Step

Step 1: Surface Preparation – Start with a Solid Foundation

• Clean and dry the surface thoroughly; remove dust, oil, or residues that could affect adhesion.
• Ensure the substrate is level, solid, and crack-free.
• For wet areas (e.g., showers), apply a waterproofing membrane to prevent moisture damage.
• Remove trims or outlet covers that could interfere with tile layout.
• Use a leveling compound to smooth uneven surfaces if needed.

Step 2: Layout Planning – Ensure a Symmetrical Pattern

• Locate the center point of the installation area to plan a balanced, symmetrical layout.
• Dry-lay a few mosaic sheets to ensure consistent veining and color flow, especially with Carrara’s natural gray veining and Dolomite’s subtle white tones.
• Adjust sheet placement to minimize small, awkward cuts at the edges.
• Leave 1.5–3 mm spacers between sheets for even grout lines.

Step 3: Adhesive Application – Choose the Right Thin-Set for Polished Marble

Recommended Thin-Set Brands (Natural Stone-Friendly):

• Mapei
• Laticrete
• Ardex

Instructions:

• Always use a white, non-staining thin-set mortar formulated for natural stone to avoid discoloration of the polished surface.
• Mix small batches that can be used within 30 minutes.
• Use a 1/4″ notched trowel; spread adhesive evenly with the flat side, then comb at a 45° angle for optimal coverage.
• Back-butter each sheet to ensure a strong bond and reduce lippage.
• Work in small sections to prevent the adhesive from drying prematurely.

Step 4: Cutting & Fitting – Precision Matters

• Use a wet saw with a fine diamond blade designed for marble to minimize chipping.
• Mark cuts with a pencil for accurate results.
• Smooth cut edges using a stone file or rubbing block to preserve the polished finish.
• Dry-fit sheets to ensure alignment and continuity before permanent placement.

Step 5: Setting Tiles – Maintain the Basket Weave Pattern

• Begin from the center and work outward to preserve pattern balance.
• Press mesh-backed sheets gently but firmly into the adhesive.
• Use spacers to maintain consistent gaps between sheets.
• Tap lightly with a rubber mallet to level the surface and prevent lippage.
• Immediately remove excess adhesive with a damp sponge to protect the polished surface.
• Allow to cure for at least 24 hours before grouting.

Step 6: Grouting & Sealing – Protect the Polished Finish

• Use non-sanded grout to avoid scratching the polished marble surface.
• Apply grout diagonally with a rubber float, ensuring all joints are filled.
• Wipe off excess grout immediately with a damp sponge.
• After 15–20 minutes, buff away haze with a soft, dry cloth.
• Let the grout cure for 72 hours.
• Apply a penetrating marble-safe sealer to protect against moisture, stains, and etching.

Maintenance Tips – Keep It Pristine

• Clean regularly with pH-neutral cleaners formulated for natural stone.
• Avoid acidic or abrasive substances that could dull or damage the polished surface.
• Reseal periodically depending on use and exposure to preserve the finish.
• Use felt pads under furniture to protect against scratches.
