Installation Guide – Bernini Frozen 12×24 Porcelain Tile Natural Rectified

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Verify substrate suitability, flatness, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required by the application.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within tolerances appropriate for 12×24 tile.
  • Dry-lay to plan layout, balance cuts, and align grout joints with key visual lines; avoid narrow slivers at perimeters.
  • Blend tiles from multiple boxes to evenly distribute any shade or pattern variation.
  • Select a joint width appropriate for rectified tile and the pattern; include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and for the tile’s size/format.
  • Key mortar into the substrate, then comb with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve coverage.
  • Set tiles with a slight perpendicular motion to collapse ridges and achieve proper bond; meet or exceed coverage requirements for the area of use (higher in wet areas and exteriors).
  • Use a leveling system where helpful to minimize lippage on larger-format installations.
  • Protect newly set tile from traffic and moisture until mortar cures per manufacturer guidance.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Use a wet saw with a premium diamond blade rated for porcelain.
  • Mark and support tiles carefully to reduce chipping on cuts.
  • Ease sharp cut edges where they will be exposed.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Choose a grout suitable for porcelain and the selected joint width; mix and apply per manufacturer instructions.
  • Pack joints fully with a rubber float; clean diagonally and remove haze promptly with clean water.
  • Use appropriate sealant at changes of plane and movement joints; do not grout these areas.
  • Limit traffic until grout has cured as directed by the manufacturer.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for porcelain tile; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
  • Use entry mats and protective pads to minimize grit and scratching.
  • Follow grout and setting material manufacturers’ maintenance recommendations; reseal cementitious grout if specified.
