Installation Guide – Acorn Pecan 9×36 Natural Wood Look Porcelain Tile

Important Advisory

Always follow manufacturer instructions, ANSI A108 standards, TCNA guidelines (including EJ171 for movement joints), and local building codes. Verify substrate suitability, flatness, and load capacity. This product has a PEI rating of 0 and is intended for wall applications. Use appropriate waterproofing in wet areas and proper exterior detailing in freeze–thaw climates.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Verify substrate is flat, plumb, clean, and dry before layout begins.
  • Establish control lines with chalk to keep courses straight and balanced on the wall.
  • Dry-lay and blend tiles from multiple boxes to distribute shade and pattern variation for a natural wood-look appearance.
  • For plank installations, avoid excessive offset; a maximum 1/3 (33%) stagger is commonly recommended unless otherwise directed by the manufacturer to reduce lippage risk with large formats. Maintain the manufacturer-recommended minimum grout joint for rectified tile and plan for perimeter and movement joints per EJ171.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and large/elongated formats. Select a trowel that achieves full coverage based on substrate conditions.
  • Key mortar into the substrate and comb in straight, parallel ridges. Back-butter planks as needed to improve bond and coverage, especially on large or rectified pieces.
  • Set tiles with a slight perpendicular motion to the trowel ridges to collapse mortar and ensure proper transfer. Periodically lift a tile to verify coverage.
  • Use a tile leveling system when appropriate to help minimize lippage on elongated planks.
  • Clean mortar squeeze-out from joints and surface before it cures. Allow the installation to cure per mortar manufacturer instructions before grouting or exposing to service.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Use a professional wet saw with a diamond blade suitable for porcelain to achieve clean, accurate cuts.
  • Measure carefully, mark cut lines clearly, and dry-fit cut pieces before setting.
  • Support long, narrow cuts to prevent chipping or breakage and handle elongated planks with care.
  • Wear appropriate PPE, including eye and hearing protection.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout compatible with porcelain and the chosen joint width. Follow manufacturer recommendations for joint size with rectified edges.
  • Pack grout fully into joints using a rubber float, then clean with a damp sponge per grout instructions, refreshing rinse water frequently.
  • Honor all movement joints and transitions with appropriate sealant; do not fill these with rigid grout.
  • Allow grout to cure fully before routine cleaning or exposure to moisture.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Dust or vacuum surfaces regularly to remove grit.
  • Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for porcelain tile; rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Avoid harsh abrasives, acids, or oil-based cleaners that may affect grout or finishes.
  • Porcelain tile generally does not require sealing; consult the grout manufacturer regarding grout sealers if desired.
  • Use protective pads where applicable and implement mats in entry areas to reduce tracked debris.
