Installation Guide – Utah Granite 12×24 Porcelain Tile Natural Pressed

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Confirm substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Verify the substrate is clean, dry, sound, and flat within industry tolerances for the selected tile size.
  • Dry-lay to plan layout, balance cuts, and align pattern or shade; mix tiles from multiple boxes for even distribution.
  • Select a grout joint appropriate for pressed-edge tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile.
  • Key mortar into the substrate and comb in straight, parallel ridges with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter as needed to improve coverage.
  • Set tiles with a slight back-and-forth motion to collapse ridges; achieve coverage levels required by application and location.
  • Use a leveling system if needed to help minimize lippage on larger-format installations.
  • Allow mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting or light traffic.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut with a wet saw using a premium diamond blade rated for porcelain.
  • Support the tile fully, mark cuts accurately, and ease sharp cut edges where exposed.
  • Drill penetrations with diamond-tipped bits at low speed and with adequate cooling.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Choose a grout suitable for porcelain and the selected joint width; follow manufacturer mixing and cure times.
  • Pack joints completely with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly.
  • Use appropriate sealant at movement joints and all changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
  • Protect the installation from traffic until grout has cured.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for porcelain tile; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
  • Use entry mats and protective pads under furnishings to reduce abrasion from grit.
  • Follow grout manufacturer maintenance guidance; seal cementitious grout if recommended.
