Always follow Happy Floors installation instructions, applicable local building codes, and recognized tile industry standards. Confirm that the substrate, setting materials, waterproofing, drainage, and movement-joint requirements are appropriate for the specific installation before work begins.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Verify that the substrate is clean, dry, sound, and suitably flat for the selected tile format and installation area.
- Plan the layout before setting tile, using dry-laid pieces where helpful to balance the design and reduce narrow perimeter cuts.
- Inspect and blend tile from multiple boxes as installation progresses to help distribute normal shade and pattern variation.
- Use spacers appropriate to the layout and rectified tile, and provide movement accommodation at required locations in accordance with applicable industry guidance.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a suitable mortar approved for porcelain tile and compatible with the substrate and application.
- Apply mortar to the prepared substrate with an appropriate trowel, and back-butter tiles when needed to promote adequate contact and support.
- Set each tile with a slight back-and-forth motion to establish a consistent bond and proper mortar coverage for the installation conditions.
- Check alignment and surface flatness regularly during installation, adjusting tiles before the mortar sets.
- Allow the setting material to cure according to the mortar manufacturer’s instructions before grouting or subjecting the installation to traffic or use.
Step 3: Cutting
- Cut porcelain tile with a wet saw and a quality diamond blade intended for porcelain.
- Measure and mark cuts carefully, and support the tile fully during cutting to help minimize chipping.
- Ease or finish exposed cut edges as appropriate for transitions, corners, or other visible locations.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Select grout compatible with porcelain tile, the joint width, and the conditions of the installation; follow the grout manufacturer’s instructions.
- Fill joints evenly, remove excess grout carefully, and clean the tile surface without disturbing the joints.
- Use an appropriate flexible sealant rather than grout at movement joints, changes of plane, and other locations requiring movement accommodation.
- Protect the completed installation until the grout and setting materials have cured as directed by their manufacturers.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean the tile routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for porcelain surfaces.
- Avoid harsh acids, abrasive products, and cleaning methods that may damage adjacent grout or finished materials.
- Follow the grout manufacturer’s care instructions, including any recommendation for sealing cementitious grout.
- Remove construction residue and grout haze using products appropriate for porcelain and in accordance with label directions.
