Installation Guide – Onyx Honey Natural Rectified 4×12 Porcelain Tile

Important Advisory

Inspect all cartons before installation to confirm product, color, size, finish, and acceptable variation. Do not install material with visible defects. Follow Happy Floors installation recommendations, mortar and grout manufacturer instructions, applicable local building codes, and recognized tile industry standards. Confirm that the selected application, substrate, drainage, and environmental conditions are appropriate before setting the tile.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Measure the installation area and establish control lines before beginning. Plan the layout to minimize small cuts and maintain balanced terminations.
  • Dry-lay tiles from multiple boxes to review the Honey color, natural finish, and shade variation before installation. Blend material throughout the project for a balanced appearance.
  • The 4×12 format can be arranged in horizontal, vertical, stacked, offset, or other approved decorative patterns. Account for the rectified edges when planning alignment and grout joints.
  • Select grout-joint spacing according to the tile layout, substrate conditions, applicable industry guidance, and the recommendations of the tile, mortar, and grout manufacturers. Include movement joints where required by the installation environment.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Confirm that the substrate is clean, dry, flat, stable, and structurally sound. Remove dust, grease, paint, curing compounds, and other materials that could interfere with bonding.
  • Repair cracks, uneven areas, or damaged substrate conditions before installation. In moisture-prone areas, coordinate any required waterproofing system with the substrate and project specifications.
  • Use a quality mortar approved for porcelain tile and suitable for the specific substrate and installation environment. Apply mortar using the manufacturer-recommended method and trowel for the conditions.
  • Set tiles while the mortar is within its recommended working time. Press and move each tile into place to promote consistent contact, and periodically lift tiles to verify appropriate mortar transfer and coverage.
  • Use spacers or an approved leveling method as appropriate to maintain the planned alignment and joint consistency. Check lines and finished elevations regularly, particularly with rectified tile and stacked layouts.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Measure and dry-fit cut pieces before setting them. Use a professional tile cutter, wet saw, or other equipment with a blade suitable for porcelain tile.
  • Protect finished surfaces during handling and cutting. Make detailed cuts carefully around outlets, plumbing penetrations, corners, and other obstructions.
  • Smooth or finish exposed cut edges where appropriate for the design. Keep cut edges in locations that will be covered by trim, grout, or other planned finishing details when possible.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Allow the mortar to cure according to the mortar manufacturer’s instructions before grouting.
  • Select grout compatible with porcelain tile, the planned joint width, and the installation environment. Apply grout according to the grout manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Remove excess grout from the tile surface and joints with suitable tools before it hardens. Use clean water carefully to avoid washing out joints or leaving residue.
  • Honor movement joints and changes in plane with the sealant or joint treatment specified for the installation rather than filling them rigidly with grout.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Remove mortar, grout residue, and construction debris using cleaning products and methods approved for porcelain tile. Do not allow cement-based residue to remain on the surface.
  • Clean regularly with a mild, non-abrasive tile cleaner and a soft cloth, mop, or sponge. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, and tools that may scratch or dull the finish.
  • Address spills and tracked-in soil promptly, and maintain grout joints according to the grout manufacturer’s care recommendations.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s guidance before applying any sealer or specialty treatment. Test cleaning products in an inconspicuous area before broad use.
