Important Advisory
Follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Confirm substrate suitability, waterproofing/drainage where required, and provide movement accommodation joints per TCNA EJ171.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Verify the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within tolerances appropriate for 12×24 tile.
- Plan the layout by dry-laying tiles and centering the design to avoid small perimeter cuts.
- Blend tiles from multiple boxes to distribute shade and pattern variation evenly.
- Select a joint width appropriate for rectified tile and the intended pattern; include movement joints at perimeters and transitions.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile; select products suitable for the project’s substrate and size format.
- Key mortar into the substrate, then comb with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to increase contact.
