Installation Guide – Macaubas Azul Natural 4×12 Porcelain Tile

Important Advisory

Inspect all tile before installation to confirm color, shade, surface character, size, and finish. Plan the layout carefully and follow Happy Floors instructions, mortar and grout manufacturer directions, applicable local codes, and recognized tile-industry standards. Confirm that the selected installation environment, substrate, drainage, and weather conditions are appropriate for the product.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Verify that the substrate is clean, dry where required, flat, stable, properly prepared, and free of dust, grease, paint, curing compounds, or other materials that could interfere with bonding.
  • Establish reference lines and dry-lay representative tiles before setting to review the Azul color, natural finish, and any shade or pattern variation.
  • Blend tiles from multiple boxes during installation to create a balanced distribution of color and visual variation.
  • Plan the 4×12 layout in advance, including transitions, perimeter cuts, penetrations, and any changes of plane. Choose the grout-joint width in accordance with tile-industry standards and the recommendations of the tile, mortar, and grout manufacturers.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a high-quality mortar suitable for porcelain tile and the specific substrate and installation conditions. Follow the mortar manufacturer’s requirements for mixing, application, open time, and curing.
  • Apply mortar consistently with a suitable notched trowel selected according to the substrate, tile, and mortar manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Set tiles into the mortar with firm, even pressure and periodically remove a tile to verify appropriate mortar transfer and coverage. Do not install over mortar that has exceeded its recommended open time.
  • Use spacers or an appropriate leveling method as needed to maintain the planned alignment and joint consistency. Check lines and surface plane frequently, especially in stacked or offset patterns.
  • Keep mortar out of the joints and remove residue from the tile surface before it hardens. Allow the setting material to cure as directed before grouting.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Use a professional tile cutter, wet saw, or other equipment with a blade suitable for porcelain tile.
  • Measure, mark, and dry-fit cut pieces before final setting. Use appropriate tools for openings around outlets, plumbing, corners, and other penetrations.
  • Handle cut pieces carefully and protect finished surfaces during cutting and installation. Follow equipment safety instructions and use suitable personal protective equipment.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout compatible with porcelain tile, the planned joint width, and the installation environment.
  • Apply grout according to the grout manufacturer’s instructions, working it fully into the joints while avoiding unnecessary buildup on the tile surface.
  • Remove excess grout with a clean, damp sponge without using excessive water. After curing, remove any remaining haze with a cleaning method approved for the tile and grout.
  • Provide movement joints and perimeter accommodations where required by the substrate, installation conditions, and recognized industry standards. Use an appropriate flexible sealant at changes of plane and other specified movement locations.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Remove mortar and grout residue promptly using products and methods approved for porcelain tile.
  • Clean regularly with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth, mop, or suitable non-abrasive pad.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive tools, and cleaning methods that may damage or alter the natural finish.
  • Maintain grout joints and any flexible sealant according to the respective manufacturer’s care recommendations. For exterior installations, keep drainage paths clear and address standing water or other site conditions that could affect the installation.
