Always follow Happy Floors installation instructions, applicable local building codes, and recognized tile industry standards, including ANSI and TCNA guidance where applicable. Confirm that the substrate, setting materials, waterproofing, drainage, movement accommodation, and intended installation area are appropriate for the project.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Inspect all cartons before installation and confirm the product, color, finish, size, shade, and lot information. Do not install tiles with visible defects.
- Prepare a layout by dry-laying tiles or referencing a planned layout to balance the field and avoid unnecessarily narrow perimeter cuts.
- Blend tiles from multiple boxes during installation to distribute natural shade and pattern variation throughout the surface.
- Plan joint locations, perimeter gaps, movement joints, and changes of plane in accordance with the project conditions and recognized industry guidance. Do not rely on grout to bridge movement joints.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Verify that the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and appropriately flat for the selected tile and installation conditions.
- Use a setting material recommended by the mortar manufacturer for porcelain tile and the specific substrate and application.
- Apply mortar according to the setting-material manufacturer’s instructions, combing it consistently in one direction and periodically checking coverage.
- Set each tile with a suitable motion to collapse mortar ridges and achieve proper contact. Back-buttering may be appropriate depending on the tile, substrate, and installation conditions.
- Maintain the planned alignment and joint spacing throughout the installation. Use leveling aids only when appropriate for the tile and setting system, and follow their instructions precisely even when the tile has Rectified edges.
Step 3: Cutting
- Cut porcelain tile with equipment and a diamond blade suitable for porcelain.
- Measure and mark cuts carefully, supporting the tile during cutting to help reduce chipping or breakage.
- Smooth or ease exposed cut edges as appropriate for the finished location, and use suitable trim or transition details where required.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Allow the setting material to cure according to its manufacturer’s instructions before grouting.
- Select grout compatible with porcelain tile, the planned joint width, and the intended application. Follow the grout manufacturer’s instructions for mixing, placement, cleaning, and curing.
- Fill joints fully, remove excess grout carefully, and clean the tile surface without disturbing the joints.
- Use an appropriate flexible sealant at changes of plane, movement joints, and perimeter conditions where required; do not fill these locations with rigid grout.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Remove installation residue promptly using cleaning products recommended for porcelain tile and the grout system.
- Maintain the surface with a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for porcelain tile. Avoid harsh acids, abrasive products, and cleaners that may damage grout or leave a residue.
- Use mats or other appropriate measures to help limit tracked-in grit in floor installations, and follow the grout manufacturer’s maintenance and sealing guidance where applicable.
