Important Advisory
Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Verify substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required for the intended application.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances for 12×24 tile.
- Plan the layout by dry-laying tiles, centering the design, and avoiding narrow perimeter cuts.
- Blend tiles from multiple boxes to evenly distribute shade and veining variation.
- Use spacers appropriate for rectified tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile.
- Key mortar into the substrate, then comb with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve coverage.
- Set tiles with a slight perpendicular motion to collapse ridges and achieve proper bond; target industry-required coverage for the area of use.
- Use a leveling system if needed to help minimize lippage on larger units.
- Allow mortar to cure per manufacturer directions before grouting or light traffic.
Step 3: Cutting
- Use a wet saw with a premium diamond blade designed for porcelain.
- Mark cuts carefully and support the tile fully to reduce chipping.
- Ease exposed cut edges as needed for a safe, finished transition.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Select a grout suitable for porcelain and the chosen joint width; follow manufacturer instructions for mixing, application, and cure time.
- Pack joints fully with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
- Use appropriate sealant at movement joints and all changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
- Protect the installation from foot traffic until the grout has cured.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for porcelain tile; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
- Use walk-off mats and protective pads under furniture to reduce abrasive wear.
- Follow grout and setting material manufacturers’ maintenance guidance; reseal cementitious grout if recommended.
