Important Advisory
Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Verify substrate suitability, waterproofing/drainage where required, and provide movement accommodation joints per EJ171.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within tolerances for large-format tile.
- Plan the layout by dry-fitting tiles, centering the design, and avoiding small perimeter pieces where possible.
- Blend tiles from multiple boxes to distribute tone/pattern uniformly.
- Use appropriate spacers and maintain a consistent joint; include movement joints at the intervals required by standards and site conditions.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a quality polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and, where needed, for large-format tile.
- Key mortar into the substrate, comb with an appropriate notched trowel, and back-butter tiles to improve coverage.
- Set tiles with a slight sliding motion to collapse ridges; achieve coverage levels required by application (typically 80–95%).
