Important Advisory
Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Ensure proper substrate preparation, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Verify the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances for tiles of this size.
- Dry-lay to confirm layout, balance cuts, and align grout joints; center the design to avoid sliver cuts at perimeters.
- Blend tiles from multiple boxes to distribute shade and pattern variation evenly.
- Plan appropriate joint width for pressed-edge tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile.
- Key mortar into the substrate, comb with an appropriate notched trowel, and back-butter as needed to improve coverage.
- Set tiles with a slight back-and-forth motion to collapse ridges and achieve proper bond; meet coverage requirements for the specific application and location.

Step 3: Cutting

- Follow grout and setting-material manufacturers’ maintenance recommendations; seal cementitious grout if specified.
