Installation Guide – Bernini Frost 12×24 Porcelain Tile Polished Rectified

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Confirm substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and required waterproofing/drainage for the intended application.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Verify the substrate is clean, dry, sound, and flat within tolerances for tile of this size.
  • Plan the layout by dry-laying tiles, centering the design, and avoiding small perimeter cuts where possible.
  • Blend tiles from multiple boxes to distribute any shade variation evenly.
  • Use spacers appropriate for rectified tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171 at changes of plane and perimeters.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile.
  • Key mortar into the substrate, then comb with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve coverage.
  • Set tiles with a slight back-and-forth motion to collapse ridges; achieve the coverage level required by application and location (commonly 80–95%).
  • Use a leveling system if needed to help minimize lippage.
  • Allow mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting or allowing light traffic.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut with a wet saw using a premium diamond blade suitable for porcelain.
  • Mark and support cuts carefully to reduce chipping; ease sharp cut edges where exposed.
  • Drill with diamond-core bits at low speed and with adequate cooling if penetrations are required.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout appropriate for porcelain and the chosen joint width; follow manufacturer mixing and cure directions.
  • Pack joints fully with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
  • Use suitable sealant at movement joints and changes of plane—do not grout these areas.
  • When working with polished surfaces, test grout on a spare piece to confirm it does not scratch or stain.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for porcelain tile; avoid acids, harsh alkalis, and abrasive pads.
  • Use entry mats and felt pads on furniture to minimize abrasion from tracked-in grit.
  • Follow grout manufacturer maintenance guidance; reseal cementitious grout if recommended.
