Installation Guide – Baltimore Gris 12×24 Porcelain Tile Natural Rectified

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Verify substrate suitability, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances for tiles of this size (12×24).
  • Plan the layout by dry-laying tiles and centering the design to avoid sliver cuts at perimeters and focal areas.
  • Blend material from multiple boxes to distribute any shade variation evenly.
  • Select spacers appropriate for rectified tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile.
  • Key mortar into the substrate, then comb with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve bond.
  • Set tiles with a slight back-and-forth motion to collapse ridges and achieve coverage consistent with industry requirements for the area of use.
  • Use a tile leveling system if needed to help control lippage on 12×24 installations.
  • Allow mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting or permitting light traffic.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut with a wet saw using a premium diamond blade designed for porcelain.
  • Mark cuts carefully and support the tile fully to minimize chipping.
  • Lightly ease exposed cut edges where appropriate for safer, smoother transitions.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Choose a grout compatible with porcelain and the selected joint width; follow manufacturer mixing and cure guidelines.
  • Fully pack joints with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove residual haze promptly with clean water.
  • Use appropriate sealant at changes of plane and movement joints—do not grout these areas.
  • Protect the installation from foot traffic until grout has cured per manufacturer guidance.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for porcelain; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
  • Use entry mats and furniture pads to help limit tracked-in grit and scratching.
  • Follow grout manufacturer recommendations for maintenance; seal cementitious grout if advised.
