Installation Guide – Ruby Green Pixel Honed Marble Mosaic Tile

Material Notes

  • Natural green marble in a honed (matte) finish.
  • Small “pixel” chips mesh-mounted on ~12″x12″ sheets (some lots may be paper-faced).
  • Green/serpentine marbles can be moisture-sensitive (possible curling/warping). See Adhesive section for setting options.
  • Suitable for walls, backsplashes, shower floors/walls, and light-traffic residential floors. Numerous grout joints improve traction.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

  • Substrate must be clean, dry, rigid, and very flat (≤1/8″ in 10′). Skim/patch as needed.
  • Approved substrates: cement backer board, cured concrete, or mortar bed meeting ANSI standards.
  • Wet areas: install ANSI A118.10 waterproofing; shower floors require ¼” per foot slope to drain.

Step 2: Dry Layout & Sheet Planning

  • Blend sheets from multiple boxes to distribute natural shade variation.
  • Snap level reference lines; confirm sheet orientation (arrows on the back when present).
  • Trim mesh edges and stagger sheet seams so the sheet grid disappears; pre-fit around outlets/edges.

Step 3: Adhesive Selection (Moisture-Sensitive Marble)

  • Best practice for serpentine/green marbles: use a 100% solids epoxy mortar (ANSI A118.3) to prevent curling/warping.
  • Alternative (jobsite mockup required): a rapid-setting, low-water, polymer-modified thin-set (ANSI A118.15) specifically labeled for moisture-sensitive stone.
  • Avoid premixed mastic in all applications and avoid prolonged water exposure during install/clean-up.

Step 4: Trowel & Application

  • Use a 3/16″ V-notch (or 1/4″x3/16″ V-notch) on flat substrates.
  • Key in with the flat side, comb in one direction, then lightly flatten ridges so they don’t telegraph through the small chips.
  • Work in areas you can cover within 10–15 minutes to avoid skinning (shorter with rapid-set or epoxy).

Step 5: Setting the Mosaics

  • Place sheets to your layout lines; press in with a rubber grout float or beating block for full contact and a flat plane.
  • Lift/adjust immediately if lippage occurs; back-butter individual chips if needed.
  • Clean squeeze-through adhesive from joints and faces promptly with a barely damp sponge/microfiber. Minimize water.
  • If paper-faced: set paper out, beat in, lightly wet paper after initial grab (≈10–20 min), remove paper, true up joints.

Step 6: Cutting & Detailing

  • Use a wet saw with a continuous-rim diamond blade for marble; tape the cut line to reduce chip-out.
  • For tiny trims, use mosaic nippers sparingly; dress exposed cuts with a rubbing stone.
  • Finish exposed edges with stone trim, metal profiles, or matching moldings.

Step 7: Grouting (Honed, Dark/Green Marble)

  • Allow adhesive to cure (typically 24 hrs for cementitious; follow label for epoxy/rapid-set).
  • For joints ≤1/8″, use unsanded grout; for slightly wider joints, choose a fine-aggregate, marble-safe grout (test first).
  • On dark honed marble, use a grout release or pre-seal to limit pigment uptake/haze; always make a mockup.
  • Pack diagonally with a rubber float; clean with minimal water. Do not use acidic haze removers.

Step 8: Sealing

  • After grout cures (≈72 hours), apply a penetrating, breathable sealer approved for marble and grout.
  • Re-seal periodically based on exposure (e.g., every 1–2 years in wet zones).

Maintenance

  • Clean with pH-neutral, non-abrasive stone cleaners only; avoid acids, vinegar, bleach, or abrasive pads.
  • In showers, squeegee/wipe dry after use to limit mineral deposits; use marble-safe scale removers if needed.

Movement Joints

  • Honor structural joints and provide soft joints per TCNA EJ171 at perimeters and changes of plane.
  • Use 100% silicone (stone-safe) in corners and where tile meets dissimilar materials.

Important Notes & Disclaimer

  • Perform a moisture sensitivity check (24-hr damp piece test). If curling/warping occurs, set with epoxy mortar and consider epoxy grout.
  • Natural marble varies in tone/veining; blend sheets before setting. Expect slight size/thickness tolerances common to mosaics.
  • Stonemarket USA is not responsible for substrate issues or improper installation. Professional installation is recommended.
