Installation Guide – Lotus Carrara White Honed Marble Mosaic Tile
Material Notes
- Natural Carrara white marble featuring soft gray veining and a honed (matte) finish.
- Lotus-shaped marble pieces, mesh-mounted on a 10.5″ × 12″ sheet.
- Recommended for interior walls, backsplashes, shower walls, and decorative accent areas.
Step 1: Surface Preparation
- Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, flat, and structurally sound.
- Correct surface variations greater than 1/8″ over 10 feet using an appropriate leveling or skim coat.
- Install ANSI A118.10-compliant waterproofing in wet areas such as showers.
- Always use white thin-set mortar to prevent shadowing or discoloration beneath light Carrara marble.
Step 2: Dry Layout & Planning
- Dry-lay sheets from multiple boxes to evenly distribute natural veining and tone variation.
- Establish level reference lines to maintain consistent alignment of the lotus pattern.
- Trim mesh backing as needed to achieve smooth pattern continuity at edges and transitions.
Step 3: Adhesive Application (White Thin-Set)
- Use a white polymer-modified thin-set mortar meeting ANSI A118.4 or A118.15.
- Recommended trowel size: 3/16″ V-notch.
- Key mortar into the substrate, comb evenly, and lightly flatten ridges to avoid telegraphing through the marble.
- Work in small sections that can be tiled within 10–15 minutes.
Step 4: Setting the Sheets
- Place sheets carefully along layout lines, maintaining consistent grout joint spacing.
- Press sheets evenly using a rubber float to ensure full mortar contact.
- Stagger sheet seams where possible to avoid visible grid lines.
- Remove excess thin-set immediately to keep joints clean.
Step 5: Cutting & Detailing
- Cut tiles using a wet saw with a continuous-rim diamond blade.
- Apply painter’s tape along cut lines to reduce chipping.
- Smooth cut edges with a rubbing stone for a refined finish.
Step 6: Grouting
- Allow thin-set to cure for at least 24 hours before grouting.
- Use unsanded grout for joints 1/8″ or smaller.
- Test grout on a small, inconspicuous area to confirm color compatibility and avoid staining.
- Apply grout diagonally with a float and clean carefully using minimal water.
Step 7: Sealing
- After grout has cured for 72 hours, apply a high-quality penetrating stone sealer.
- Reapply sealer periodically, especially in wet or high-moisture areas.
Maintenance
- Clean only with pH-neutral stone cleaners.
- Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, as Carrara marble is sensitive to etching.
- Wipe down shower walls regularly to reduce mineral buildup.
