Stone Properties & Handling – Know Your Material

• Honed Finish: Picket Dolomite has a smooth, matte finish that is less prone to scratching than polished surfaces but can still absorb stains if unsealed. Always handle with care and seal after installation.
• Porosity: Dolomite is moderately porous. It can absorb liquids, so apply a high-quality penetrating sealer to protect against stains and moisture intrusion.
• Color Variation: Expect natural variation in veining and color across different sheets. Dry-lay sheets to preview and align for a consistent look.
• Acid Sensitivity: Dolomite, like all carbonate-based stones, is sensitive to acidic substances which can cause etching. Use only pH-neutral cleaners and avoid acidic spills.
• Cutting Considerations: Dolomite is slightly harder than typical marble but still requires a wet saw with a fine diamond blade for clean cuts. Always smooth cut edges to avoid chipping.

Step 1: Surface Preparation – Start with a Clean Foundation

• Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, and debris.
• Verify that the surface is level, solid, and free from cracks.
• Apply a waterproofing membrane in wet areas such as showers to protect against moisture damage.
• Remove trims, outlet covers, or obstructions that could interfere with sheet placement.
• Use a leveling compound if needed to achieve a smooth surface.

Step 2: Layout Planning – Maintain Pattern Consistency

• Find the center of the wall or floor to ensure a symmetrical, balanced layout.
• Dry-lay the sheets to preview veining consistency and color variation, adjusting placement for best flow.
• Plan ahead to avoid small or awkward cuts at edges or corners.
• Use 1.5–3 mm spacers between sheets to ensure uniform grout lines.

Step 3: Adhesive Application – Choose a Reliable Thin-Set

Recommended Brands:

• Mapei (White Thin-Set Mortar)
• Laticrete
• Ardex

Instructions:

• Mix small batches of thin-set that can be used within 30 minutes to avoid premature drying.
• Use the flat side of a 1/4″ notched trowel to apply adhesive evenly on the substrate.
• Comb the mortar at a 45° angle for better adhesion and coverage.
• Lightly back-butter each mosaic sheet to ensure full contact and minimize lippage.
• Work in manageable sections to prevent the adhesive from drying out before the tile is placed.

Step 4: Cutting & Fitting – Handle with Precision

• Use a wet saw with a fine diamond blade for clean, accurate cuts to fit edges and corners.
• Mark cuts precisely using a pencil or wax pencil to ensure a neat finish.
• Smooth any rough edges with a stone file or rubbing block to avoid chipping or damage.
• Dry-fit any cut pieces before final installation to verify the fit and alignment with the overall pattern.

Step 5: Setting Tiles – Keep the Pattern Flowing

• Start from the center of the layout and work outward to maintain symmetry and pattern consistency.
• Press each mesh-backed sheet firmly into the adhesive, ensuring full contact.
• Use spacers between sheets to maintain consistent spacing and avoid crowding.
• Gently tap sheets with a rubber mallet or grout float to level them and achieve an even surface.
• Wipe off any excess thin-set from the surface with a damp sponge before it dries.
• Allow the installation to cure for at least 24 hours before proceeding with grouting.

Step 6: Grouting & Sealing – Finish with Care

• Use non-sanded grout to avoid scratching the honed surface of the dolomite.
• Apply grout diagonally with a rubber float to fill joints completely.
• Wipe away excess grout promptly with a damp sponge to avoid haze build-up.
• After 15–20 minutes, buff the surface gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove any residual haze.
• Allow the grout to cure for at least 72 hours before applying a sealer.
• Seal with a high-quality penetrating stone sealer to protect against stains and moisture.

Maintenance Tips – Keep It Looking New

• Clean regularly using pH-neutral, stone-safe cleaners to maintain the honed finish.
• Avoid harsh or acidic cleaning products that can damage the surface.
• Reseal the stone periodically, especially in high-traffic or wet areas, to maintain its protective barrier.
• Use felt pads under nearby furniture to prevent scratches and damage.
