Installation Guide – Acorn Natural 3×18 Porcelain Bullnose
Important Advisory
Follow manufacturer instructions, ANSI A108/A118 standards, TCNA guidelines, and local codes. For wet areas, use appropriate waterproofing behind the tile. Verify color, caliber, and lot before installing. Dry-fit bullnose with field tile and confirm finished-edge orientation prior to setting.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Confirm the substrate is clean, flat, dry, and properly prepared for tile work.
- Plan the layout so the bullnose defines the finished perimeter where tile edges will remain exposed.
- Dry-fit bullnose pieces with coordinating field tiles to verify alignment, joint width, and overall appearance.
- Blend pieces as needed for consistent shade and finish across the installation.
Step 2: Bullnose Installation
- Use a high-quality, porcelain-rated thin-set mortar compatible with the substrate.
- Key in mortar and comb with an appropriately sized notched trowel to achieve proper coverage.
- Press each bullnose piece firmly into place and align it flush with adjacent field tiles.
- Maintain consistent grout-joint spacing and straight, even edges.
- Work within the mortar’s open time and remove excess mortar from joints and surfaces before it hardens. Allow mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting.
Step 3: Cutting
- Use a wet saw with a porcelain-rated diamond blade for clean, accurate cuts.
- Measure carefully and dry-fit cut pieces before setting.
- Whenever possible, orient factory-finished bullnose edges toward exposed areas for the cleanest appearance.
- Plan inside and outside corners thoughtfully; miter where appropriate for a professional finish.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Use a grout suitable for porcelain tile and the planned joint width.
- Select a grout color that complements the Acorn Natural finish and surrounding tile.
- Pack joints fully, clean excess with a damp sponge, and finish per grout manufacturer instructions.
- Honor movement joints per TCNA EJ171 and use appropriate sealant at changes of plane. Allow grout to cure fully before use.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for porcelain tile.
- Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, or acidic cleaners that may affect the finish or grout.
- Wipe residues promptly and inspect grout and sealant lines periodically, reapplying sealant at movement joints as needed.
