Verify substrate suitability, flatness, and movement-joint requirements before starting. Inspect tiles for shade, caliber, and any damage; blend from multiple boxes for a consistent appearance.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Confirm room dimensions, squareness, and substrate flatness; address irregularities before tiling.
- Establish control lines to center the layout and minimize small cuts at perimeters.
- Dry-lay several tiles to review shade/tonal variation and plan blending from multiple boxes.
- Account for required movement joints at changes of plane and per industry guidelines.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a high-quality polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and the specific substrate.
- Follow mortar manufacturer recommendations for trowel selection; key in mortar and comb in one direction for proper coverage.
- Back-butter tiles as needed to achieve adequate mortar contact; periodically lift a tile to verify transfer.
