Important Advisory
Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA). Verify substrate suitability, flatness, and movement accommodation. Provide waterproofing/drainage where required.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Confirm the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within tolerances for the selected tile format.
- Dry-lay to balance cuts and align patterns; center the layout to avoid sliver cuts at perimeters.
- Blend tiles from multiple boxes to distribute shade and pattern variation evenly.
- Select an appropriate joint width for rectified tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile; follow manufacturer instructions for mixing and open time.
- Key mortar into the substrate and comb with a suitable notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve coverage.
- Set tiles with a slight sliding motion to collapse ridges and achieve proper bond; target coverage in line with industry guidelines for the area of use.
- Use a leveling system when helpful to minimize lippage on larger-format installations.
- Allow mortar to cure as directed before grouting or allowing light traffic.
Step 3: Cutting

Step 4: Joint Filling

- Use appropriate sealant at movement joints and all changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
- Protect the installation from traffic until grout has cured.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner suitable for porcelain tile; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
- Use entry mats and felt pads to reduce tracked grit and potential scratching.
- Follow grout and setting material manufacturers’ maintenance recommendations; seal cementitious grout if advised.
