- Approved substrates: concrete, cement backer board, masonry block.
- For wet areas (e.g., shower walls), apply a waterproof membrane before installation.
- Remove dust, oils, and existing coatings that may hinder adhesion.
Step 2: Layout Planning
- Dry-lay panels to assess color variation and veining consistency.
- Use a level to mark horizontal reference lines for proper alignment.
- Stagger joints to create a more natural, seamless appearance.
- This panel is for vertical applications only.
Step 3: Adhesive Application – Travertine-Safe Mortar
Recommended Mortars (for travertine):
- Mapei Ultraflex LFT (white, polymer-modified)
- Laticrete 255 or 254 Platinum (white)
- Custom Building Products Natural Stone & Large Tile Mortar (white)
Instructions:
- Use a 1/2″ square-notched trowel to spread adhesive evenly.
- Back-butter each panel for 100% coverage, especially on rough surfaces.
- Press panels firmly into place with a slight sliding motion.
- Tap gently with a rubber mallet to ensure flush alignment.
- Clean adhesive residue immediately with a damp sponge.
Step 4: Cutting & Edge Work
- Use a wet saw with a diamond blade for travertine cutting.
- Miter external corners or use complementary corner pieces if available.
- Always wear proper safety gear during cutting.
Step 5: Grouting
- This is a dry-stack system – grout is not used.
- Ensure all panels are tightly fit with no visible gaps.
Step 6: Sealing (Highly Recommended for Travertine)
- Use a penetrating, water-based sealer that is safe for travertine.
- Do not use acidic or solvent-based sealers.
- Apply evenly using a brush, roller, or low-pressure sprayer.
- Reseal every 1–2 years based on exposure and usage.
Maintenance Tips
- Clean only with pH-neutral stone cleaners.
- Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaning agents that can etch travertine.
- Wipe spills promptly to prevent staining.
- Use a soft brush for textured surfaces if needed.
