Installation Guide – Utah Slate 12×24 Porcelain Tile Natural Pressed

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (e.g., ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Ensure proper substrate preparation, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Verify the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances for tiles of this size.
  • Plan the layout with reference lines and dry-lay a portion to optimize cuts and balance edges.
  • Blend tiles from multiple boxes to distribute shade/pattern variation evenly.
  • Use spacers appropriate for pressed edges and follow ANSI and grout manufacturer guidance for joint width. Include movement joints per TCNA EJ171.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer‑modified thin‑set mortar approved for porcelain tile and the project conditions (interior/exterior, wall/floor).
  • Key mortar into the substrate, then comb with a suitable notched trowel; back‑butter tiles as needed to improve contact.
  • Set tiles with a slight sliding motion to collapse ridges and achieve required coverage (minimum 80% interior, up to 95% in wet/exterior areas).
  • Use a leveling system if needed to help control lippage, especially with larger formats.
  • Protect the installation and allow mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting or light traffic.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut with a wet saw and a high‑quality diamond blade rated for porcelain.
  • Mark cuts carefully and support the tile fully to reduce chipping.
  • Ease sharp cut edges where they will be exposed.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout suitable for porcelain and the chosen joint width; follow manufacturer directions for mixing, application, and cure times.
  • Pack joints fully with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
  • Use appropriate sealant at movement joints and changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
  • Protect the installation from traffic until grout has cured.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH‑neutral cleaner approved for porcelain tile; avoid acids and harsh abrasives.
  • Use entry mats and felt pads where appropriate to reduce tracked‑in grit and surface wear.
  • Follow grout and mortar manufacturers’ maintenance guidance; reseal cementitious grout if recommended.
