Important Advisory
Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA guidelines). Ensure proper substrate preparation, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.
Step 1: Layout & Planning
- Verify the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within industry tolerances for 12×24 tile.
- Plan the layout by dry-laying tiles, centering the design, and avoiding sliver cuts at perimeters.
- Blend material from multiple boxes to distribute shade and pattern variation evenly.
- Use spacers appropriate for rectified tile and incorporate movement joints per TCNA EJ171.
Step 2: Tile Installation
- Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain and the tile’s format.
- Key mortar into the substrate, comb with an appropriate notched trowel, and back-butter tiles as needed to improve coverage.
- Set tiles with a slight back-and-forth motion to collapse ridges and achieve required bond; target 80–95% coverage depending on area and exposure.
- Employ a leveling system when necessary to help minimize lippage on larger-format installations.
- Allow mortar to cure as directed by the manufacturer before grouting or allowing traffic.
Step 3: Cutting
- Cut with a wet saw using a premium diamond blade suitable for porcelain.
- Mark cuts carefully and support the tile fully to reduce chipping.
- Ease sharp cut edges where they will be exposed.
Step 4: Joint Filling
- Select a grout suitable for porcelain and the chosen joint width; follow manufacturer instructions for mixing, application, and cure.
- Pack joints fully with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
- Use appropriate sealants at movement joints and changes of plane; do not grout these areas.
- Protect the installation from traffic until grout has cured.
Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for porcelain tile; avoid acids or harsh abrasives.
- Use entry mats and felt pads to minimize tracked-in grit and scratching on floors.
- Follow grout manufacturer guidance for maintenance; seal cementitious grout if recommended.
