Installation Guide – Athena Blanc (Rodas White) 12×24 Porcelain Tile Polished Rectified

Important Advisory

Always follow the tile manufacturer’s instructions, local building codes, and recognized industry standards (ANSI A108/A118 and TCNA). Ensure proper substrate preparation, movement accommodation, and waterproofing/drainage where required.

Step 1: Layout & Planning

  • Verify the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and flat within tolerances suitable for 12×24 porcelain tile.
  • Plan the layout with dry-lays to balance cuts and avoid narrow slivers at perimeters or focal areas.
  • Blend tiles from multiple boxes to evenly distribute any shade or pattern variation.
  • Use spacers consistent with rectified tile and include movement joints per TCNA EJ171 at appropriate intervals and changes of plane.

Step 2: Tile Installation

  • Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar approved for porcelain tile and the project’s conditions.
  • Key mortar into the substrate, then comb in straight lines with an appropriate notched trowel; back-butter tiles as needed to improve bond.
  • Set tiles with a slight sliding motion to collapse ridges and achieve adequate coverage (typically 80–95% based on area and exposure).
  • Employ a tile leveling system when needed to help minimize lippage with rectangular formats.
  • Allow mortar to cure per manufacturer instructions before grouting or exposing to traffic.

Step 3: Cutting

  • Cut with a wet saw using a premium diamond blade rated for porcelain.
  • Support tiles fully during cutting and mark cuts carefully to minimize chipping.
  • Ease sharp cut edges where they will be exposed for a safer, finished feel.

Step 4: Joint Filling

  • Select a grout suitable for porcelain and the chosen joint width; confirm compatibility with polished surfaces per grout manufacturer guidance.
  • Pack joints completely with a rubber float, clean diagonally, and remove haze promptly with clean water.
  • Use appropriate sealant at movement joints and changes of plane—do not grout these areas.
  • Protect the installation from traffic until grout has cured as directed.

Step 5: Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean routinely with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for porcelain; avoid acids or harsh abrasives.
  • Use entry mats and felt pads to limit tracked-in grit and reduce surface wear.
  • Follow grout and setting material manufacturers’ maintenance guidance; seal cementitious grout if recommended.
