Installation Guide – Dolomite Chevron Honed Marble Mosaic Tile

Material Notes

• Natural dolomite marble featuring a clean white background with subtle soft veining and a honed (matte) finish.
• Chevron-shaped pieces, mesh-mounted on approximately 11.2″ x 11.2″ sheets.
• Ideal for backsplashes, bathroom walls, shower surrounds, and accent walls. Not recommended for heavy commercial floors.

Step 1: Surface Preparation

• Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, stable, and flat (maximum 1/8″ variation over 10 feet).
• Suitable substrates include cement backer board, cured concrete, or mortar beds meeting ANSI standards.
• In wet areas, apply a waterproofing membrane (ANSI A118.10) before installation.
• Always use white setting materials to prevent discoloration under light-colored marble.

Step 2: Dry Layout & Planning

• Dry-lay multiple sheets to ensure consistent pattern flow and color blending.
• Chevron pattern requires precise alignment—start from a centerline or focal point.
• Trim mesh edges as needed so sheets interlock seamlessly and avoid visible joints.
• Stagger seams slightly to prevent a grid-like appearance.

Step 3: Adhesive (White Thin-Set) Application

Adhesive:

• Use white, polymer-modified thin-set mortar (ANSI A118.4 or A118.15).
• Avoid premixed mastic, especially in wet environments.

Trowel & Technique:

• Use a 3/16″ V-notch trowel for best coverage.
• Apply mortar evenly and comb in one direction.
• Lightly flatten ridges to prevent telegraphing through the mosaic surface.
• Work in small sections (10–15 minutes open time).

Step 4: Setting the Sheets

• Carefully place sheets following the chevron pattern alignment.
• Press using a rubber grout float to ensure full contact.
• Maintain consistent joint spacing—do not compress or overlap sheets.
• Adjust individual pieces if necessary to maintain a continuous pattern.
• Clean excess thin-set immediately with a damp sponge.

Step 5: Cutting & Detailing

• Use a wet saw with a diamond blade for precise cuts.
• Apply painter’s tape over cut lines to minimize chipping.
• Smooth edges with a rubbing stone if needed.
• Finish exposed edges with trims, moldings, or metal profiles.

Step 6: Grouting (Honed Marble)

• Allow thin-set to cure for at least 24 hours.
• Use unsanded grout for joints ≤ 1/8″.
• Test grout color before full application to ensure compatibility with marble.
• Consider pre-sealing the stone to prevent grout staining.
• Apply grout diagonally and clean gently using minimal water.

Step 7: Sealing

• After grout cures (~72 hours), apply a penetrating natural stone sealer.
• Use a natural-look sealer to maintain the honed finish appearance.
• Reapply sealer every 1–2 years depending on usage.

Maintenance

• Clean regularly with pH-neutral stone cleaners.
• Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners (vinegar, bleach, etc.).
• Dry surfaces after use in wet areas to prevent water spots and mineral buildup.

Movement Joints

• Follow TCNA EJ171 guidelines for movement joints.
• Use 100% silicone sealant in corners and transitions.
